Mammoth Mountain will open its ski season on Thursday, Nov. 5, moving its start date up by more than a week after a early November storm cycle delivered fresh natural snow to the area, Active NorCal reported.
The resort had originally targeted Friday, Nov. 13 as its official opening date for the 2026-27 season. However, recent weather patterns provided enough terrain coverage to prompt resort management to adjust the timeline forward.
According to an announcement made by Mammoth Mountain on Instagram, the recent weekend storm brought between 9 and 15 inches of natural snowfall to the upper elevations of the mountain. That storm push pushed the resort’s cumulative seasonal snow total to between 12 and 20 inches. Alongside the natural precipitation, the weather system brought a sustained period of freezing night temperatures. Snowmaking crews took advantage of the low temperatures to actively produce snow across the lower slopes, building out the foundational base needed to operate.
The communications director for Mammoth Resorts stated that the combination of natural accumulation and intensive early-season snowmaking gave the resort adequate snow cover to justify moving the opening day forward to Thursday.
While the mountain will welcome skiers and snowboarders earlier than anticipated, the initial opening-day footprint will remain limited to a few specific runs and lifts. Operations will center around the Lower Panorama Gondola and the Broadway Express lift, which is commonly referred to by local regulars as Chair 1. Guests accessing the mountain on Thursday will have access to the Broadway, Silver Tip, and Rusty’s runs. Resort officials indicated that operational crews intend to expand available terrain and open additional trails as soon as localized conditions allow.
Weather conditions leading into the opening were expected to remain supportive. Forecasts called for gusty southwest winds and a chance of light snow showers on Tuesday evening, which officials noted would further assist in building up the snow pack across the active terrain.
The early launch puts Mammoth Mountain among the very first resorts in Northern California to begin operations for the winter season. The early announcement coincided with a separate confirmation from Mt. Rose, located outside of Reno, which set its opening day for Friday, Nov. 6. Together, the two decisions provide regional skiers with operational choices before the major resorts surrounding Lake Tahoe have started up their own lift systems for the year. Mammoth’s high base elevation combined with its expansive snowmaking infrastructure historically positions the resort to open early in the fall, though launching on Nov. 5 represents a particularly swift start even by the mountain's usual operational standards.
For visitors traveling to the Eastern Sierra from the Sacramento region, the drive takes approximately five and a half hours under standard conditions, utilizing Highway 50 and U.S. 395. Regional drivers should note that Tioga Pass is unlikely to serve as a viable transit option this late in the calendar year due to seasonal weather patterns and road closures.
Local residents, season pass holders, and prospective visitors seeking real-time conditions can view live mountain cameras and check the specific schedule for opening day directly on the resort’s official website.
Although the official calendar date for the resort's opening was originally set for mid-November, the early storm cycle has shifted the operational timeline, officially kicking off winter recreation on the mountain starting Thursday morning.
