Mammoth Mountain will kick off the 26-27 California ski season on Thursday, Nov. 5, moving its original opening date forward by more than a week following recent winter conditions, as Snow-Forecast reported. The earlier opening puts the local ski area ahead of schedule and marks the official beginning of West Coast resort operations for the upcoming winter season.

Mammoth Mountain had previously set a target opening date of Friday, Nov. 13. However, recent weather patterns brought cold temperatures and significant precipitation to the region, allowing mountain crews to prepare the slopes sooner than anticipated. With the updated schedule, Mammoth Mountain becomes the first ski center on the West Coast to spin its lifts this season.

This schedule change places Mammoth Mountain opening just one day ahead of Nevada's Mt Rose Ski Tahoe. Mt Rose had previously announced its intention to open for the season on Friday, Nov. 6. By advancing its timeline to Thursday, Mammoth Mountain takes the lead for regional lift operations across California and Nevada.

Mammoth Mountain reported that the decision to open early was driven by more than a foot, or over 30 centimeters, of fresh snow arriving over the past week. Specific measurements from the recent storm cycle showed snowfall totals between 9 and 15 inches, which corresponds to 22.5 to 37.5 centimeters of new accumulation on the mountain.

The recent snowfall brings the cumulative season snowfall total so far to between 12 and 20 inches, or roughly 30 to 50 centimeters. These early storm totals, combined with favorable cold windows that permitted extensive artificial snowmaking, established the necessary base to open terrain safely well ahead of the mid-November target date.

For Thursday's opening operations, Mammoth Mountain will run the Lower Panorama Gondola alongside Broadway Express, also designated as Chair 1. Visitors on opening day will have access to trails including Broadway, Silver Tip, and Rusty's. Mountain operations teams plan to continue expanding open terrain as soon as weather and snow conditions permit.

Across the state border in Nevada, Mt Rose Ski Tahoe will begin its own winter operations on Friday, Nov. 6. The resort's Lakeview Express lift is scheduled to start spinning at 9 a.m. Operating hours for Lakeview Express on opening day will run from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Skiers and riders visiting Mt Rose on Friday will have access to specific runs served by the Lakeview Express lift. Open terrain at the Nevada ski area will include KC Bowl, Ponderosa, and Pondo Park. Like Mammoth Mountain, Mt Rose is capitalizing on early November snow and cold temperatures to begin its winter season.

The early openings in both California and Nevada coincide with broader winter weather predictions for the region. Both states are among those expected to see strong performance this winter due to a powerful El Nino climate pattern. The El Nino is expected to favor the region with above-average precipitation levels.

Forecasters expect this El Nino pattern to peak over the next few months, which could bring continued storm activity and snowfall to the Sierra Nevada throughout the winter season. With Mammoth Mountain opening lift operations on Thursday, Nov. 5, and Mt Rose following on Friday, Nov. 6, the regional ski season is officially underway.
