MAMMOTH LAKES — Mammoth Mountain has officially moved its Opening Day forward by eight days, setting a new opening target of Thursday, November 5. The shift comes after an early storm cycle delivered over a foot of fresh snow to the Eastern Sierra.
as The Inertia reported, the resort had originally planned to launch its 2026-2027 ski season on November 13. However, a storm system over the Halloween weekend dropped between nine and 15 inches of fresh snow across the mountain. That snowfall, paired with cold temperatures that allowed operations teams to maximize snowmaking, prompted the schedule change.
Emily van Greuning, Communications Director at Mammoth Resorts, stated to The Inertia that Mother Nature was kind during the past storm cycle. She noted that snowmaking teams took full advantage of the recent colder temperatures to prepare the terrain for an early start. She added that dedicated crews are working on all necessary preparations and expressed excitement to welcome skiers and riders on Thursday.
The early opening puts Mammoth ahead of other West Coast resorts planning their starts. A day prior to Mammoth’s announcement, Mt. Rose, located on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe, declared it would open on November 6 following the same weekend storm system. Had Mammoth kept its original November 13 date, Mt. Rose would have taken the title of the first West Coast resort to open for the 2026-2027 season. With the revised schedule, Mammoth is set to claim that designation instead.
A spokesperson for Mammoth Mountain confirmed on Wednesday that the decision to push opening day up to November 5 began forming during the Halloween storm. The spokesperson emphasized that an opening date is always a moving target because of the extensive logistics, staffing requirements, and terrain operations involved in readying the hill.
The push for an early start highlights an ongoing effort among ski resorts to open as early in the autumn as conditions allow. While some view early openings as a marketing strategy to generate enthusiasm, resort representatives explained that the push highlights the significant labor and care invested in preparing slopes and getting lifts operating by November.
Preparations for the 2026-2027 season began months before the recent snowfall, well after the snowpack from the 2025-2026 season had melted away. One resort executive told The Inertia that groomers, snowmakers, and maintenance crews work year-round and take great personal pride in the surface conditions and equipment they prepare for the public. Groomers test the slopes daily, snowmakers operate through cold nights, and vehicle maintenance teams ensure all machinery is ready for peak operation.
With winter operations now under way across the West, Mammoth Mountain crews continue working on final preparations to get terrain ready for the revised Thursday, November 5 launch.
