MAMMOTH LAKES — The California Department of Transportation announced on November 3 that State Route 203 near Mammoth Mountain has closed for the winter season. The seasonal shutdown ends vehicle access beyond the ski area's Main Lodge toward Minaret Vista, as SnowBrains reported.

The seasonal closure specifically impacts the section of State Route 203 stretching from the Mammoth Mountain Lodge west to the Mono County line at Minaret Vista. Mammoth Mountain also shared the official announcement regarding the seasonal shutdown.

Local drivers and visitors should note that the closure does not affect access to the town of Mammoth Lakes itself, nor does it impact access to the ski area. Motorists can continue to travel on State Route 203 from U.S. Highway 395 through town up to the Mammoth Mountain Main Lodge. However, drivers will no longer be able to continue further west toward Minaret Vista or into the Reds Meadow area for the duration of the winter season.

During the summer months, this stretch of highway serves as a vital access point for several popular recreational destinations located in the Eastern Sierra. Destinations such as Devils Postpile National Monument and Rainbow Falls rely on this road for visitor vehicle access. With the seasonal winter closure now taking effect, these areas become entirely inaccessible by regular vehicle traffic.

This road shutdown is a standard component of Caltrans District 9's annual winter road closures across the region. Officials note that heavy snowfall and severe high-elevation conditions make routine road maintenance completely impractical throughout the winter months. Because of these persistent weather challenges, the route typically remains closed until spring. At that time, Caltrans crews can safely clear snow accumulations from the roadway and assess overall safety conditions before reopening the stretch to vehicle traffic.

At present, Caltrans has not provided a specific reopening date for the road. The department advised drivers that they can monitor ongoing road conditions and track further seasonal closure updates by using Caltrans's QuickMap service.

As winter weather continues to set in across Mono County, drivers planning to travel near the mountain are encouraged to check for regular updates on local travel restrictions and high-elevation road statuses.
