Mammoth Lakes, CA – The Crowley Fish Foundation (CFF) hosted a fishing adventure on Lake Mary last month for 13 local young people, aged 9 to 18. The event, supported by dedicated fishing guides and volunteers aboard pontoon boats, provided participants with hands-on experience using various fishing techniques, including bait, spin, and fly fishing gear.

Fourth-grade student Forrest Sicker expressed enthusiasm for the day, noting the enjoyment shared by the participants. The positive experience extended beyond the lake, as the event concluded with an unexpected act of generosity.

Crowley Fish Foundation supporter Chad Warrick provided $50 gift cards for Big 5 Sporting Goods to three students who demonstrated academic excellence. The recipients, all 10th-grade students from Mammoth High School, were Jeremy Chavez, Finley Kaukola, and Alberto Gonzalez. These young men expressed excitement upon receiving the gift cards and shared reflections on their fishing adventure.

Jeremy Chavez, recognized as a straight-A student, highlighted mastering the roll cast—a specific fly-fishing technique—as his favorite part of the day. Finley Kaukola, for whom this was a second CFF-hosted fishing trip, simply stated he “loved just being there.” Alberto Gonzalez, whose favorite academic subject is World History, shared his appreciation for fishing’s calm and enjoyable nature.

Warrick articulated his motivation for supporting the initiative, emphasizing the vital role of these young individuals in the future of local conservation. “These kids are the future of conservation and preservation for the Eastern Sierra,” Warrick stated. He added that the Crowley Fish Foundation is actively investing time and resources into educating the next generation, aiming to ensure they appreciate and care for the region as much as the current generation does. This commitment, Warrick explained, is why he continues to contribute to the foundation's efforts.

Chris Leonard, a CFF board director and the coordinator of the fishing event, conveyed the foundation's deep gratitude for Warrick’s sustained contributions. Leonard noted Warrick’s consistent willingness to donate equipment, gift cards, and other resources for events benefiting children, veterans, and other community members.

The event underscores CFF’s ongoing commitment to engaging local youth in outdoor activities while also recognizing their achievements in academics, fostering a connection to the natural environment and encouraging future stewardship of the Eastern Sierra.
