Living with Type 2 diabetes often requires adjustments to daily routines, particularly concerning food choices. This condition can impact everything from meal planning to dining out and everyday activities. While adapting to life with diabetes takes time, individuals do not necessarily have to abandon their preferred foods and flavors. Instead, it can present an opportunity to discover meals that align with health objectives while still offering enjoyment.

This approach was adopted by professional chef and TV show host Kardea Brown, following her husband Bryon Smith's recent Type 2 diabetes diagnosis at age 38. Brown stated that her husband's diagnosis did not signify "the end of the foods we love." Instead, it prompted her to "get creative" in the kitchen. She began reimagining her recipes to retain their familiar comfort and "soul," but with ingredients chosen to better support her husband's health.

To aid in understanding how specific ingredients might affect Smith’s glucose levels, the couple utilizes Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus sensor. This system incorporates a feature called Libre Assist, integrated within its accompanying Libre app. The technology is designed to provide real-time glucose insights. It can also help predict the potential impact of certain foods on an individual's glucose levels before a meal is consumed.

Bryon Smith described his process of using the technology, explaining that he opens the Libre Assist feature in the app and "snap a photo." This action allows him to instantly see how that particular food "might affect me before I even take the first bite." Smith also noted that the feature offers suggestions for "healthier swaps" to help mitigate the food's impact on glucose.

Beyond technological aids, small adjustments to daily lifestyle can also significantly contribute to diabetes management. Kardea Brown offers several recommendations for these changes. These include focusing on whole, unprocessed foods and reducing the consumption of sugary drinks. She also suggests incorporating more fiber into the diet and practicing portion control. Maintaining adequate hydration is another key piece of advice.

Brown further advises planning meals in advance to support consistent healthy eating. Regular physical activity and ensuring adequate sleep are also recommended as important components of a diabetes management plan. Additionally, managing stress and working collaboratively with a healthcare provider are noted as beneficial practices for individuals living with Type 2 diabetes.
